Traffic Unit
2011 Traffic

The Richmond Police Traffic Unit is primarily responsible for collision investigation, traffic-related criminal investigations, traffic law enforcement, problem solving, and collision prevention.  The Traffic Unit also provides traffic control for Richmond festivals and escorts city events and parades.

To accomplish their mission, the Traffic Officers are equipped with BMW Police Motorcycles, marked patrol cars, RADAR (Radio Detection and Ranging) and LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) speed measuring equipment, a Radar trailer, and a trailer filled with equipment needed for a sobriety checkpoint.

Richmond PD Traffic Officers undergo highly specialized training including Motorcycle Enforcement school, Basic, Intermediate and Advanced Collision Investigation, and Radar and Lidar Training.

The Richmond Traffic Unit currently accesses two enforcement grants:

Avoid the 25:
This widely popular grant includes twenty-five Contra Costa County law enforcement agencies and focuses on enforcing laws related to driving while impaired. Through this grant, Richmond officers work to educate motorists about the dangers of driving while impaired, and make arrests of impaired drivers. Sobriety checkpoints associated with the Avoid the 25 campaign are conducted countywide.

Richmond Pedestrian Safety Project:
This enforcement effort will reduce the number of pedestrian-related injury collisions by increasing driver awareness about pedestrian right-of-way. The Traffic Unit conducts enforcement activities, and works with the Richmond Engineering Department to improve intersection markings for pedestrians.
