Richmond Love Your Block is a volunteer-based community beautification program under the Community Services Department. We help residents who want to develop, lead, and implement projects that will beautify their neighborhood and involve resident volunteers the process. We are focused on spaces that are accessible to the public, such as City of Richmond parks, community gardens, and spots in the public right-of-way (such as planting strips).
2. How do I apply for a Love Your Block Mini-Grant?
As of June 2018, we unfortunately no longer have funding to award mini-grants. However, we welcome all Richmond residents, community members, and partners to reach out to us for logistical and possible in-kind support (trash bags, gloves, etc.). Let us know how we can help you lead your own volunteer-based community project!
3. How long will the Love Your Block Mini-Grant Program be active in Richmond?
The Richmond Love Your Block Mini-Grant Program is no longer active as of June 2018. We hope to continue it in the future.
4. If the Mini-Grant Program is no longer active, how can Love Your Block help me beautify my neighborhood?
While we no longer have mini-grants available, we can still help you beautify your neighborhood in various ways:
We may be able to provide supplies for your community beautification project. Sometimes we have leftover supplies from other projects, and we also have a network of supporters who may be able to provide the supplies you need. Examples of supplies include: seedlings, wood, hardware, paint, trash bags, gloves, seeds, soil, mulch, masks, and more. The Richmond Tool Library is our partner for providing tools at no cost to you.
We can help coordinate the appropriate City services for your project. For example, if you're hosting a clean-up at a Richmond park, we can coordinate a location and time for the City to collect the bags of trash that you and your volunteers fill. If you are interested in activating a vacant lot, we may be able to help you locate the property owner.
We can help publicize your community beautification event by:
Helping you create an event flier
Sharing your flier and event information on our Facebook and Instagram pages
Sharing your flier and event information in our e-newsletters and City Manager's Weekly Report
(Depending on the scale of your event) Requesting local news outlets to publish your flier and event information
5. What projects are eligible for support from Love Your Block?
Richmond Love Your Block supports projects that:
Engage resident volunteers
Beautify the community and/or help reduce litter, illegal dumping, and blight
Take place in the City of Richmond or North Richmond
6. Can Love Your Block help me fix up my house?
Generally, Love Your Block does not assist with beautifying personal private property. We are focused on spaces that are accessible to the public, such as City of Richmond parks, community gardens, and spots in the public right-of-way (such as planting strips).
In North Richmond, we have a branch program in which we mobilize volunteers to assist seniors with their front yards with maintenance such as mowing the lawn, pruning plants, and removing weeds. However, this program is only available to seniors living in North Richmond. If you know a senior who could benefit from this program, please contact us at (510) 620-6563.
7. I have an idea for a project but I've never organized one before. Can Love Your Block help me?
Yes! Talk to us if you have any questions. We are here to help you!
8. I'm not able to lead my own project at this time but still want to volunteer for community beautification projects. How can I help?
